It’s Brew Season

Hello All, I hope you have all been keeping an eye on the Battle for Zendikar spoilers as some of them are very interesting.  With new spoilers comes new brews and exciting game plans.  I’m very excited for the new enemy colour Man Lands, the new Simic land Lumbering Falls is pretty amazing.  A 3/3 for 2UG to activate and has Hexproof, seems like every control decks dream, this Along with Kiora, Master of the Depths could create an incredible Sultai Control or recursive midrange deck.  Here is what I’ve come up with so far as a potential Sultai List:

Sultai Control

3 Jace, Vryn’s Prodigy

4 Den Protector

4 Deathmist Raptor

2 Kiora, Master of the Deeps

1 Ob Nixilis Reignited

1 Tasigur, The Golden Fang

1 Gurmag Angler

4 Gather the Pack

4 Sultai Charm

3 Ruinous Path

2 Ultimate Price

3 Languish

2 Dig Through Time

4 Polluted Delta

3 Yavimya Coast

3 Llanowar Wastes

3 Lumbering Falls

4 Sunken Hollow

3 Island

3 Swamp

3 Forest

The other 2 new spoiled Planeswalkers also seem really good, Gideon, Ally of Zendikar has a lot of potential and gives a deck a lot of options depending on board state, but a Bitterblossom that doesn’t cost life at 4 mana seems good for standard.  And who doesn’t like an unstoppable Glorious Anthem, which works well when you draw a second copy or have a large board presence.  Ob Nixilis feels very powerful to me, yes 5 mana might be too difficult to pull off but for those of you who remember Phyrexian Arena you definitely went OMG this is going to be awesome!  The upside to Ob Nixilis is the fact he can kill creatures and the life lost to drawing cards is optional and not mandatory.  I feel like both of these Planeswalkers will see Standard play in various control lists/ Midrange decks, since Gideon also makes Ally’s if the other Ally’s end up being playable he will almost certainly see play in that deck.  Ruinous Path is another card I feel will see a lot of play with Heroes Downfall leaving standard, it is obviously a worse version of Downfall but it is what we get to work with.  Here is my thoughts on an updated Abzan Control list for post rotation:

POST ABZAN Control/ Midrange

4 Hangerback Walker

4 Den Protector

3 Nissa, Vastwood Seer

4 Siege Rhino

3 Gideon, Ally of Zendikar

2 Ob Nixilis, Reignited

2 Sorin, Solemn Visitor

2 Tasigur, The Golden Fang

4 Abzan Charm

3 Ruinous Path

2 Crux of fate

3 Languish

4 Windswept Heath

4 Canopy Vista

3 Shambling Vent

3 G/B Man Land

4 Sandsteppe Citadel

2 Plains

4 Swamp

2 Forest

Even though we aren’t sure what the new Green black man land is it will more then likely be played in an Abzan control/ midrange deck regardless simply for mana fixing, Shambling Vent is indeed a great addition giving us another source of life gain if need be.

For Esper control here is what I’ve come up with so far:

4 Jace, Vryn’s Prodigy

3 Giddeon, Ally of Zendikar

2 Sorin, Solemn Visitor

3 Ob Nixilis Reignited

3 Clash of Wills

4 Ruinous Path

2 Utter End

2 Hedron Network

2 Ultimate price

3 Languish

2 Crux of Fate

2 Treasure Cruise

2 Dig Through Time

4 Flooded Strand

4 Polluted Delta

3 Prairie Stream

3 Sunken Hollow

3 Shambling Vent

3 Island

3 Plains

3 Swamp

Esper Control would work similarly as Abzan Control, but instead of Creatures and life swing we have a powerful suite of Planeswalkers, Gideon, Ob Nixilis, Sorin and Jace.  Also the Esper list has the ability to draw more cards over the course of the game, but has a lot less red zone threats AKA Siege Rhino.

Land Fall being a returning mechanic for Battle for Zendikar was unexpected for myself, as the ability last time around proved to be very very powerful! This time around it doesn’t look and less powerful, with aggressive cards like Scythe Panther a Red Green Landfall deck could be very strong in the up coming standard metagame.  At the moment there doesn’t look like there is enough spoiled to make the Landfall deck good enough, but I suspect that there will be some pretty sick additions between now and the pre-release.

Another deck I have been working on that shows potential would have to be JaceKai Burn, the Mono red burn decks are losing Stoke the Flames and  it hurts the deck significantly.  However we still have Jeskai Charm it doesn’t hit creatures but when all we really want to do it bring our opponent down to zero life points I think the charm in conjunction with Exquisite Firecraft is going to be a real threat especially when the deck is also running Jace, Vyrn’s Prodigy to snapcast those burn spells for additional damage.  Here is my list:

JaceKai Burn

4 Monastery Swift spear

3 Zurgo, Bell Ringer

4 Seeker of the Way

1 Soulfire Grandmaster

4 Abbot of Keral Keep

3 Jace, Vyrn’s Prodigy

1 Goblin Heelcutter

4 Wild Slash

4 Titan’s strength

4 Jeskai Charm

4 Exquisite Firecraft

2 Valorous Stance

3 Shivan Reef

3 Battlefield forge

3 Prairie Stream

3 Flooded strand

1 Island

1 Plains

12 Mountain

There could be a few additions depending on what is released in battle for Zendikar, but outside of a burn spell and perhaps the R/W man land I don’t think I would change much from this list.  The only real issue this deck may have is the mana base and without running it for a bit I wont truly know if that will be an issue or not.

The Ally’s that have been spoiled also seem like they could do well if we get the lower curved Ally’s within a few colours, so at the moment it is hard to put together a finished list but here are some of my favorite Ally’s that have been spoiled that I feel show a lot of potential:

All three of these cards have potential to be awesome when working together, Munda seems really powerful and I can’t wait to see what he can do!

With that stay tuned as I keep my eyes pealed for more interesting cards to put into my new lists or to create new brews altogether.
