For those who are unaware, Conspiracy is the summer product that Wizards is coming out with this year. In todays article, we are going to delve into the spoilers we’ve discovered so far and talk about what we might expect!

Conspiracy is a 210 card stand alone set that will NOT be playable in Standard or Modern formats. We also know that we shall be blessed with 65 new cards, 52 of which will be playable in Commander, Legacy and Vintage. They are also coming out with a new card type called Conspiracy(Something tells me this is the card type that won’t see Legacy and Vintage play.)

Conspiracy is going to be a set like we’ve never seen before. It’s a set built around MULTIPLAYER DRAFTING where you draft 6 to 8 players and split into 2 groups of 3 or 4 players and play a game of multiplayer free-for-all!

But the fun doesn’t stop there! Wizards has already been cleverly spoiling a few cards to give people an idea of what to expect in this new set. It all started when a few players discovered that someone from Wizards must have “accidentally” put a card from Conspiracy in a few Born of the Gods prerelease packs.

Magister of Worth became the start of a brilliant Alternate Reality Game (ARG) that the geniuses from Wizards have probably been setting up for months now. The back of these cards where stamped with a number on the back.

If you called this number, you would hear someone saying what seemed like a bunch of random letters. The letters where then decrypted using an on-line program and what the people of the internet discovered was more than they ever expected:

Cogwork Librarian 4

Artifact Creature – Construct

Draft Cogwork Librarian face up. As you draft a card, you may draft an additional card from that booster pack. If you do, put Cogwork Librarian into that booster pack.

3/3 Conspiracy

This was honestly the first time in my life that I had ever witnessed any result of an ARG unfold and the end result BLEW MY MIND!!!

I’m actually going to call the number right now to see if it still works. I’ll type the result below and decrypt it.

The message has obviously changed. Lets put it through our decryption machine and see what it translates to.

Interesting. This could be part of a clue that we still haven’t discovered yet. I’ve been reading on a few forums about how some people have been typing words in some of the Daily MTG articles and finding suspicious looking flavour texts which ended up being part of other clues. After a few weeks on investigating, they eventually found that the clues started popping up images until the last one we’ve discovered where if you typed the word PALIANO in a specific article, you got this:

For those of you who don’t read the comic books, Dack Fayden is the main character in the IDW comic book series for Magic. His hands are marked in red from when he was caught stealing to ensure people knew he was a thief.

I wonder if our new discovery will unlock something else. I’ll fill in our internet detectives on our new clue and see if we come up with anything. Until then, lets talk about our new planeswalker Dack Fayden!

Is he even playable?

At 3 mana, Dack has been aggressively costed to hopefully see play in the eternal formats. There aren’t many planeswalkers seeing play in Legacy or Vintage. Jace, the Mind Sculptor, Liliana of the Veil and Elspeth, Knight-Errant are probably the 3 top ones seeing play right now. You can also include Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas in some Affinity and control lists but other than that, I haven’t seen any successful lists with any other planeswalkers. Mana costs are a big deal when looking at planeswalkers. The cheaper they cost, the most potential they have to be used if in the right context (Sorry Tibalt, maybe next time) but most importantly, the card is blue so it pitches to Force of Will… 😛

+1: Target player draws two cards, then discards two cards.

Filtering in any format is always beneficial to it’s user. An ability like this is always welcome in my deck, especially when its strapped onto a sweet 3 mana planeswalker! Being able to dig 2 cards deep and fuel my Snapcaster Mages with a simple +1 is going to make me feel like I’m that much closer to winning the game.

It’s also nice to see that you can target any player with this ability. It might not come up as often but I’m sure a few Timmy players out there are just living the dream thinking about how they can abuse this with Spirit of the Labyrinth or dare I say Notion Thief!!!!!

Thanks for the cards bro! Oh by the way you still have to discard 2.

I’m a big fan of Notion Thief! The flavour is just so sweet! I get to steal draws! MAGICAL CHRISTMAS LAND ALL OVER AGAIN!!! And I even might get a chance to steal things with Dack too!

-2: Gain control of target artifact.

This ability at first didn’t excite me all that much as a Legacy player until I realized that I could steal my opponents Umezawa’s Jitte or prevent them from playing it (unless they want me to have it…). The use of this card will be way better in a format like Vintage and Commander where artifacts are all over the place.

The issue with Dack is his playability in Legacy will depend entirely on the amount of artifacts seeing play. You have to look at both of the first abilities to determine if it’s what you want your deck to be doing. A planeswalker that can fix your draws and steal a few artifacts is really nice flavour wise but Dack’s inability to protect himself and his overall utility in a format as powerful as Vintage and Legacy will be put to the test I’m sure.

-6: You get an emblem with “Whenever you cast a spell that targets one or more permanents, gain control of those permanents.”

I’m going to be honest. This is probably one of the least exciting planeswalker ultimates I’ve seen in a while. I know it’s on a 3 mana planeswalker and everything but the effect requires you to have spells that targets your opponents permanents without destroying or exiling them. The only real use I see in this emblem is being able to Lightning Bolt any targetable creature and it either dies or you control that permanent.

But lets just say we go to a place where I always find myself 2 minutes after I see any new spoiler shall we?

I can’t imagine myself playing cards like Gridlock in Legacy for the pure sake of a Dack Fayden ultimate so we’re going to go to our old favorite format, COMMANDER!

First we need a general with the right colors to be able to play him and we also need a general that can use Dack to it’s full potential. I’m thinking something like Melek, Izzet Paragon could be WEIRD and fun…

This deck might not be what Dack is looking for per say but it really seems like a deck like this can use Dack Fayden fairly easily. I honestly just can’t wait to build a deck like this and start getting all these extra turns! This deck might look all over the place right now and I guess it’s kind of the point right now. I suppose I could try and figure out if I can have a way to setup a combo somehow by adding a few cards like Mind’s Desire and Time Spiral but the real fun in a deck like this is to figure out a way to win without having to take an hour to win the game during that turn while your opponents sit there not doing anything. So instead of taking one long turn, you can have all the turns instead and ultimate all your planeswalkers while you’re at it!

I’m getting really excited for this new set to come out because there is a good chance for us to get our hands on something that doesn’t have to go through the standard format first allowing the possibility for more powerful cards to make it to eternal formats to get something new and exciting come around to stir things up a bit…

Hold on I’m getting a call…

I just got a hold of my internet detectives and was told that the new clue I just gave them was already discovered a long time ago and that I should stop wasting their time…

Well I guess that I’ll just go back to lurking the forums while the rest of the Conspiracy set unfolds.

Thanks for reading!
